To be honest, I'll answer my own question... I don't know, but I've taken sensible precautions not to get caught...
Just received a phone call from 0800 030 4909 to my Mobile phone aledgedly from HSBC bank (with whom, I do have an account). He then said that he needed to confirm who I was to protect my confidentiality & security, so then read out teh first part of my post code & asked me to complete second part.
I told him that I appreciated him wanting to maintain my security & so I would support that by not providing my information!
He then said that he could provide a number for me to call back on or send info in teh post, so I said post would be fine...
If it arrives, then maybe it was genuine... if not, well, perhaps I've saved some money!!
In which case, I'm glad that I shared this!!

This number rings me every day.
I haven't answered as I figured it was a sales call.
Did anything ever turn up in the post?
I too have received calls from this number.
As i too am wary of giving out details to people who call you (as opposed to you calling them) I waited until I got home and rang the customer service number that i obtained from HSBC's website.
I gave her the phone number that had called me a few hours ago and the woman even told me the time they'd rang me!
I can confirm that this number is indeed HSBC and it's what they term a "service call" basically to check how everything is with you and your accounts/extras etc and to see if you require any questions answering, things like that.
Spoke to HSBC thisavo, they had no record of a call. IT IS A SCAM, any scumbag says it isn't, is working for them. Say NO to ting if someone calls you, and tell the F*CKERS TO DIE!! 0800 030 4909 IS A SCAM!!! Data collection agencies can funk off too.....
I had the same call phoned HSBC and they had no record of any calls to me, I was told the information they asked for would not be asked by one of their callers and I have only had the account a week.
Were are they getting the details from its certainly not my computer as I only used the computer at the branch to set up my account and didnt do a thing with the account until the call
Maybe it is now a scam number and hsbc no longer have this number. But 4 yrs ago it was definitely them. I dialled 01226 261010 (try it yourself if you wish, it's their Internet banking helpline) and spoke to someone who told me the exact minute (out of 1440 to choose from!) that the call was made. Thanks for the new information
It's the hsbc marketing team, this answer is coming up loads of times on other sites to do with nusisance calls
